Langlaufen in Germany

I took a study break this weekend with the Wageningen IBEX chapter (alpine club) and did some Langlaufen (cross country skiing) in Germany's Sauerland (as in Sauerkraut). Under the direction of our professional meteorologist, Bert, we skied 32 km across the landscape of rolling hills.

The last 12 km were after dark on a snowy night with the full moon palely shining though. Despite starting in the rain and the marginal snow conditions, it was a lovely trip and the fresh air did this student well. The best part was flying down skinny logging roads on ice after dark.

From Langlaufen
Bert on the GPS. "I like the atmosphere, especially at night."

From Langlaufen
Joost getting through the woods in the dark.

From Langlaufen
Roemer looking serious in the twilight. "We are extremely far from the cars."

From Langlaufen
The summit at 3pm. Glorious view.
